The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) addressed the admission criteria for federal universities, emphasizing that scoring 300 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) alone would not suffice if other requirements were not fulfilled. This clarification came in response to a candidate’s commendation and suggestion regarding admission based on merit rather than catchment areas.
The candidate, identified as Inilayo Stephen Opuofoni, expressed appreciation for the work of JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, while advocating for the elimination of the Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) quota system in admissions.

Opuofoni tweeted: “Prof. Oloyede is doing his best. Kudos to him. In addition, he should work towards ensuring that admission is made based on merit and not on ELDS. Why should someone who scores above 300 not get admitted into a federal university? It is not his/her catchment area.”
In response, JAMB acknowledged that scoring 300 in the UTME is commendable but stressed that admission decisions are based on multiple criteria, including ELDS status. JAMB reaffirmed that while a UTME score of 300 is favorable, admission is contingent upon meeting all specified requirements.
JAMB’s response reads: “ELDS is one of the criteria for admission. It can’t be jettisoned. An aggregate of 300 scores in UTME is good but does not guarantee admission if the applicant does not meet other criteria.”

Even if the candidate meets other criteria but has better candidates ahead of him, he may not be considered for admission once the course quota for the school has been filled up. Such candidate can therefore apply for change of institution/course to a less competitive one.
